Just through the back door of a bistro fit for a big city lurks an attached brick and wood bar with a bay view patio of its own.
At lunchtime, the office armies pack in and fill up on appetizers, only to return at night to get blitzed and blow on cigars from the bar's special menu.
The slick, cherry wood and mustard tables match the low lights from above, making for a metropolitan space inside and out. With a nice selection of drafts - Stella, Bass and the Buds - a drink menu scrolled on a chalk board above the bottles and a floor-to-ceiling wine case, Back Jack's is a fine choice for a night of drinking. Try the multi-colored tortilla chips with spinach and artichoke dip, one of many bar-food items a step up in quality for its category.
As the major place of dining and drinking on an island known for its high-priced crowd, Back Jack's and Jackson's combine for one of the most swanky nights out in the Bay.
It may be home base for the office army during and after hours, but it can also be a nice place to bring the significant other for a romantic cocktail on the water.
The waterfront bar on chichi Harbour Island offers a front-row view of the Hillsborough Bay and a scene to be seen for Tampa's upwardly mobile and their wannabe counterparts. Happy hour Fridays pack in the well-heeled hordes, and the specialty martinis are downed often with the bistro's popular and surprisingly affordable sushi. Regular lunch and dinner menus offer a pretty good selection of upscale eats, and the nationally recognized wine list won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2001. The real draw, however, is the expansive patio that provides awesome views.
