Text Message Donations and Online Donations to Help Haiti

The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12 has brought out the giving spirit among many who have been watching in horror as disaster footage is shown on television. For those interested in helping out, there are several ways to give financially to help in the Haitian
earthquake relief effort.

Supplies provided by relief agencies include medical supplies, food, water, blankets and tents. While most relief organizations are urging people to not volunteer their time at this point, monetary donations are welcomed and very much needed.

Text 'Haiti' to 90999 for Red Cross Donations

The American Red Cross has a relief effort underway, but reports stated that Red Cross teams were running out of medical supplies very quickly. The Red Cross has set up an easy way to donate $10 to the Haitian relief effort by texting the word "Haiti" to 90999. The $10 donation will be added to your cellular bill, making this an easy way to help with the humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

I did this myself and after sending the initial text received a reply asking me to confirm my donation. After replying with "yes," I received another text message that said "Thanks! $10 charged to your phone bill for Red Cross Int'l Relief."

Salvation Army Haitian Relief Effort

The Salvation Army is taking online donations for Haitian relief at salvationarmy.org. In addition, according to CBC News Canadian donors can text donations of $5 by texting "Haiti" to 45678. The text message donations are set up by Mobile Giving Foundation.

UNICEF

The United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, is also working on a relief effort for victims of the Haitian earthquake. Donations can be made through the UNICEF website at unicef.org.

World Vision

World Vision is a children's relief organization that has worked in Haiti for the last 30 years helping to improve the lives of children. World Vision is taking online donations earmarked for earthquake relief at worldvision.org.

International Rescue Committee

The IRC is also accepting text and online donations. Text "HAITI" to 25383 to make a $5 donation. More information can be found at theIRC.org.
